hi all,

i realise RAUK isnt the best place to ask for this. i tried to put my pic on the Wild About Britain forum and it wouldnt accept it. even when i downsized it.
also, this category is WHAT IS IT? - seen something in the wild and wondering what it is? this is the place to ask.

it DOESNT say it has to be a suspected herp.

so can suz or anyone else here ID this shrub/small tree for me please?





i spotted it in a hedgerow near the Thames and Severn Canal at Marston Meysey in Wiltshire. about 7 or 8' tall. calcareous soil.
note occasional long thorns on stems, fruits similar to rosehips but much more globular and finely toothed, slightly lobed leaves. the wood is dense and stringy like hazel.

Certainly no expert and no guarantee, but how about Broadleaf Cockspur Thorn(Crataegus x prunifolia). Obscure, probably hybrid origin pretty widespread generally deliberately planted.

or it could be a variety of White beam that are all varient hybreds of the same family of hawthorn rowans etc ? keithAGILIS40483.2768634259
